Journalism 2.0: How Social Media Has Transformed the News
Presented by the Sacramento Social Media Club
Technology continues to revolutionize the way news is reported and consumed. Anyone with a smartphone, a blog or a Twitter account can break a story hours before the morning paper or evening news. In this new digital reality, media outlets are scrambling to find ways to use social media tools to reach and engage their audiences in meaningful ways. Journalists are live blogging and scanning tweets. Newsrooms are talking SEO. PR professionals are creating digital assets, hosting web chats and Ustreaming events to promote their news.
Hosted by Sacramento Social Media Club, "Journalism 2.0" is a free event* for news consumers, journalists and PR professionals that want to learn more about the latest trends in social media and reporting.
Topics include:
- How do newsrooms use social networking sites for story ideas and sources?
- How have sites like Twitter and Youtube changed reporting practices?
- How has the Web allowed for more communication between reporters and readers?
- Is there less demand for time-intensive investigative pieces in a digital world filled with short attention spans?
Social media can spread news of an international disaster in seconds. It can also spread false information just as fast. It’s a medium that all media outlets are wrestling with as traditional journalism shifts to accommodate the immediacy of the Digital Age.

*Since our very first event in April of 2009 Sacramento Social Media Club has proudly provided the community with FREE panels and workshops. We've tried to bring you cutting edge topics, knowledgeable speakers, and great food and drinks. We've been able to do all this for free thanks to generous sponsors and individuals. But, as we grow, we need your help. At this event, we're asking for a very small $10 donation at the door to help us cover costs.

Pallas Hupé joined CBS 13 in January, 2006. She co-anchors the 5, 6 and 10 p.m. newscasts with Sam Shane. Before joining the team here, Pallas spent six years both anchoring and reporting at the Fox and UPN affiliates in Detroit, Michigan. She's also anchored and reported in Michigan, North Carolina and Florida. The two time Emmy award-winning journalist has also received recognition from the Associated Press, Society of Professional Journalists, Radio and Television News Directors Association as well as the Michigan Association of Broadcasters. She also hosted a show on Saudi Arabian television when her family lived there in the 1980s. A graduate of Oxford University with a master's degree in politics, philosophy and economics, Pallas is originally from Washington, D.C. Married, with two boys, Pallas chose to move to Sacramento because it's a great place to work and raise a family, and that balance to her is key.
Matthew Keys is an online news producer and digital content creator for Sacramento's FOX affiliate KTXL-TV. He is responsible for introducing the Sacramento television media market to social media, launching the market's first Twitter and Facebook accounts. At a time when most digital content producers are mainly kept behind-the-scenes, Keys, along with many other producers at FOX40 News, have become household names as they interact with the Sacramento-Stockton-Modesto news audience on a daily basis.
Ryan Lillis has covered Sacramento City Hall at The Bee since July 2008. Prior to that, he covered crime at The Bee for two years after graduating from the Graduate School of Journalism at the University of California, Berkeley. He grew up in the Finger Lakes region of Upstate New York. Ryan began using Twitter last year as a way to follow a few key sources - most notably the mayor - but now sees it as a valuable tool for promoting stories on sacbee.com.
JT Long is a veteran reporter and editor who has created compelling marketing content for government, business and nonprofit clients for the last 15 years. JT Long tells each company's unique story through a combination of ghostwritten books, white papers, case studies, magazine articles, marketing kits, event literature and blog posts. She also excels at promoting company brands through social media using Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, article placement services and affiliate marketing. Her work has appeared in Fortune, Comstock's Business, Engineering News-Record, Architectural Record, Mortgage Banking, Sacramento State College of Business Administration's Business Futures and Public CEO magazines. She served as Director of Content for a group of Mortgage Planner magazines, managing multi-media content including podcasts, videos, variable data custom marketing and community bulletin boards. JT is chair of the Sacramento Press Club Seminars Committee, Co-Founder of Writers Who Wine, leader for media outreach for Global Entrepreneurship Week Sacramento 2008 and 2009, and author of "Writer's Secret: MasterMind Your Way to Publishing Success."
Rob McAllister began his broadcasting career on the island of Maui where he served as the on-air personality for the ESPN affiliate in Hawaii. Despite his love for the island, Rob was eager to return back home to the mainland where he began work at Sacramento’s top talk radio and news station KFBK 1530. Rob created and currently hosts a weekly high school series that features local athletes, parents, and coaches in the community. He is also the primary reporter for the Amgen Tour of California cycling event (even anchoring special coverage and providing play by play when the riders sweep through downtown), the Sacramento Kings, Sacramento State and U.C. Davis athletics, the Eppies Great Race triathlon and even reported from Pebble Beach for the 2010 U.S. Open. His other reporting duties include the capitol, city hall as well as breaking stories around the Sacramento Valley.
Michelle Ponto has worked as a journalist for over 15 years for a number of magazines and media companies including The New York Times, CBS News in Memphis and Houston, ABC News, Discovery Channel, Advantage Steel Magazine, ComputerWorld Magazine and Fool.com. Over the years, she has interviewed people from all walks of life including award-winning chefs and sports heroes, to doctors pioneering new medical treatments and celebrities like Beyonce and Gloria Gaynor. Her work has been published in Canada, the United States, Germany and Great Britain. Michelle moved to Sacramento in December 2009, and is currently a web journalist and the Executive Producer of Interactive & Social Media for News10, the local ABC station.
